Functional Psychiatry for Cataumet, MA

Unlike a traditional psychiatric work-up, the functional approach takes the whole person into account: sleep, nutrition, thyroid function, hormone levels, and other physiological factors that can drive mood, anxiety, and attention symptoms alongside standard evaluation. Harborside Psychiatrics is based right on the Cape, in Yarmouth Port, and we work with year-round residents of Cataumet whose lives split into two very different seasons: the quiet stretch of fall and winter, and the long, busy pull of a Bourne summer economy that depends on second homes, marinas, and seasonal businesses. If you’re raising a family here, running a business that lives or dies by June through September, or settling into retirement on Squeteague Harbor, functional psychiatry is built around the idea that your mental health and your physical health are not separate conversations.

Functional Psychiatry for people in Cataumet, MA

Every appointment at Harborside happens by video, and the process is more straightforward than most people expect. You’ll need a phone, tablet, or computer with a camera and microphone, a private room where you can talk freely, and a stable internet connection. That’s it.

An initial functional psychiatry evaluation typically runs longer than a standard follow-up, because your prescriber is reviewing your history in detail and, when it’s clinically appropriate, discussing lab work that looks at physiological contributors to your symptoms. Follow-up appointments are shorter and scheduled at an interval that fits your treatment plan, often every few weeks at the start and spacing out from there.

Harborside is based in Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts, and licensed to provide care to patients located in Massachusetts at the time of their appointment. If medication is part of your plan, prescriptions are sent electronically to whichever pharmacy you use in Cataumet, Bourne, or nearby.

How telehealth care actually works

Functional psychiatry at Harborside addresses the same range of concerns as standard psychiatric care, with an added layer of attention to physical health factors that can complicate a mental health picture. That includes depression, anxiety, attention and focus difficulties, mood instability, and sleep disruption. It also includes situations where someone has already tried medication or therapy without the kind of change they were hoping for, and wants a clinician to look more closely at what else might be contributing, whether that’s a thyroid imbalance, a nutrient deficiency, or a hormonal shift.

This is not a replacement for therapy or for standard medication management. It’s a way of evaluating and treating conditions that considers the body alongside the mind.

What we treat

Your first visit is a conversation. Your prescriber will ask about your current symptoms, your medical history, medications and supplements you’re taking, sleep, diet, and stress patterns. Depending on what comes up, they may recommend targeted lab work: things like a thyroid panel, vitamin D, B12, ferritin, or other markers known to affect mood, energy, and concentration. Nothing is ordered as a routine blanket panel. It’s based on your specific presentation.

From there, you and your prescriber build a plan together. That might include medication, referral to one of our therapists, lifestyle adjustments, or a combination, depending on what your history points toward.

What the first appointment involves

Medication management and functional psychiatry at Harborside are performed by our psychiatric nurse practitioners: Rachel Egan, RN PMHNP-BC, who is also Harborside’s clinical director, Emily Pardue, RN PMHNP-BC, and Kirstin Ritchie, RN PMHNP-BC. Each is qualified to evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe for mental health conditions, and each brings her own areas of clinical focus to functional psychiatry work. Full bios and credentials for all three are on the team page.

When therapy is part of your plan, whether for ongoing support or for concerns like disordered eating, you’ll work with our licensed therapy team: Hannah Legesse, LICSW, Tori Mahoney, LMHC, Jacquelyn Duford, LCMHC, ATR, and Lexie Carchedi, LCSW.

Who our clinicians are

Harborside is a private-pay practice and does not bill insurance directly for appointments. Current fees for an initial and a follow-up appointment are listed on the pricing page, and questions about cost can be answered before anything is booked.

What it costs

If you’re in Cataumet and thinking about whether functional psychiatry makes sense for you, the first step is scheduling an initial evaluation. There’s no separate intake call required beforehand. You can also reach out with questions about the approach, cost, or what to expect before you commit to an appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is functional psychiatry the same as functional medicine?

No. It’s psychiatric care from a licensed psychiatric nurse practitioner that also reviews lab work and lifestyle factors, not a separate functional medicine practice.

No. Whether labs make sense is decided together at the first visit, based on your history and symptoms.

Bring it to your first appointment. Existing results can often be used instead of repeating tests.

No. Labs are typically billed separately by the lab itself and may be partly covered by insurance depending on the plan.

Yes. It’s meant to work alongside an existing therapist or primary care provider, not replace them.

Functional psychiatry includes the same prescribing and monitoring, plus a review of physical health factors like sleep, nutrition, and lab markers.
