Functional Psychiatry for Hyannis, MA

A traditional psychiatric work-up asks what symptoms you have and which medication might match them. Functional psychiatry asks a different question first: what is happening in the body that might be driving those symptoms in the first place. Harborside uses targeted lab testing to look for nutrient deficiencies, thyroid irregularities, and other physiological factors that can contribute to depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions, rather than starting and stopping at a diagnostic checklist.

Hyannis has a rhythm most of the year that summer visitors never see: year-round households running seasonal businesses, retirees settled year-round on the Cape, and families whose calendar splits into two very different halves. Harborside Psychiatrics is based just up Route 6A in Yarmouth Port, and we work with people across Hyannis who want a mental health approach that accounts for the whole person, not just the symptom in front of them.

Care happens over live video, from wherever you are. You will need a smartphone, tablet, or computer with a camera and a private internet connection. A typical initial evaluation runs about 60 minutes; follow-up appointments are shorter, usually 20 to 30 minutes, and are scheduled based on your treatment plan, often monthly at first and less frequently once things settle into a routine.

If a prescription is part of your plan, it is sent electronically to the pharmacy of your choice in Hyannis or wherever is most convenient for you. There is no waiting room and no drive to Yarmouth Port. You log in, the clinician sees your face and hears your voice, and the appointment proceeds much as an in-person visit would, just without the trip. Harborside is based in Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts, and delivers this care by video to patients across the state.

How telehealth care actually works

Functional psychiatry at Harborside is used alongside standard evaluation for conditions including depression, anxiety, ADHD, bipolar disorder, and mood symptoms that have not responded the way you expected to prior treatment. It can also be a useful lens for chronic fatigue, brain fog, or irritability that seems tied to something physical as much as emotional. The goal of testing is to identify contributing factors like vitamin D, B12, iron, or thyroid function that may be part of the picture, so that treatment planning accounts for more than symptoms alone.

What we treat

Your first visit is a full evaluation. Expect questions about your mental health history, current symptoms, sleep, diet, medical history, and any medications or supplements you take. From there, your clinician will talk with you about whether targeted lab testing makes sense, what it would look at, and how the results would shape next steps. You leave the appointment with a plan, not just a diagnosis.

What the first appointment involves

Medication management and functional psychiatry at Harborside are performed by psychiatric nurse practitioners: Rachel Egan, RN PMHNP-BC, who is also Harborside’s clinical director, Emily Pardue, RN PMHNP-BC, and Kirstin Ritchie, RN PMHNP-BC. Each is qualified to evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe for mental health conditions, and each brings the same attention to underlying physiological factors that defines Harborside’s approach to functional psychiatry. Full bios and credentials for each clinician are on the team page.

When therapy is part of your care, it is delivered by Harborside’s licensed therapy team: Hannah Legesse, LICSW, Tori Mahoney, LMHC, Jacquelyn Duford, LCMHC ATR, and Lexie Carchedi, LCSW. Depending on your needs, your plan may involve a prescriber alone or a prescriber working alongside a therapist.

Who our clinicians are

Harborside is a private-pay practice and does not bill insurance directly for appointments. Current fees for an initial evaluation and for follow-up appointments are listed on the pricing page, and questions about cost can be answered before anything is booked.

What it costs

If you are ready to schedule, you can book an initial evaluation online. If you are not sure functional psychiatry is the right fit, you can reach out first with questions about the approach, the testing involved, or what to expect from your first appointment. Either way, care is delivered by video to patients across Hyannis and the rest of Massachusetts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is functional psychiatry the same as functional medicine?

No. It’s psychiatric care from a licensed psychiatric nurse practitioner that also reviews lab work and lifestyle factors, not a separate functional medicine practice.

No. Whether labs make sense is decided together at the first visit, based on your history and symptoms.

Bring it to your first appointment. Existing results can often be used instead of repeating tests.

No. Labs are typically billed separately by the lab itself and may be partly covered by insurance depending on the plan.

Yes. It’s meant to work alongside an existing therapist or primary care provider, not replace them.

Functional psychiatry includes the same prescribing and monitoring, plus a review of physical health factors like sleep, nutrition, and lab markers.
