Functional Psychiatry for Pocasset, MA

A traditional psychiatric work-up asks what symptoms you have and which medication might fit them. Functional psychiatry asks a wider question first: what is going on in your body that might be driving those symptoms in the first place. Harborside uses targeted testing to look at deficiencies and physiological factors that can affect mood, energy, sleep and focus, alongside a standard mental health evaluation, not instead of one.

Harborside Psychiatrics is based in Yarmouth Port, on the Cape, and works with people across Pocasset by video. Pocasset’s year-round households know the difference between the town in July and the town in January, and a lot of that difference shows up in sleep, energy and stress load long before it shows up as a diagnosis. Whether you run a seasonal business on the canal side, work off-Cape year-round, or you’re managing a household through the quiet months after Labor Day, a fuller picture of what’s driving your symptoms matters more than a quick label.

Functional Psychiatry for people in Pocasset, MA

Care happens over video, from wherever you are in Pocasset, using a phone, tablet or computer with a stable internet connection. You don’t need special software installed ahead of time. A link goes out before each appointment and you join through your browser.

Initial appointments run longer, since they cover history, current symptoms and the functional workup, including any lab testing that’s indicated. Follow-up appointments are shorter and focus on how things are tracking and whether any adjustments are needed. Frequency depends on where you are in care, sometimes closer together at the start, then spaced out as things settle into a rhythm.

If a prescription is part of your plan, it’s sent electronically to the pharmacy you choose in or near Pocasset. Lab work, when ordered, is typically done at a local draw site or through a mail-in kit, and results are reviewed together at your next visit. Harborside is based in Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts, and holds Massachusetts licensure, which is what allows this care to reach patients across the state by video.

How telehealth care actually works

Functional psychiatry at Harborside is used alongside evaluation and treatment for concerns such as persistent low mood, anxiety, trouble concentrating, low energy, disrupted sleep and stress that doesn’t seem to resolve on its own. It’s also used when someone has already tried a standard medication approach and wants a more complete look at what else might be contributing, such as nutritional deficiencies, thyroid or hormonal factors, or other physiological pieces that a symptom checklist alone won’t catch.

This isn’t a replacement for medication management when medication is appropriate. It’s an added layer of assessment that informs the plan, including whether stimulant medication, another controlled medication, or a non-controlled option makes sense for your situation, all of which can be discussed and prescribed as clinically appropriate in Massachusetts.

What we treat

The first visit is a full evaluation. Expect questions about your mental health history, current symptoms, sleep, diet, stress, and any physical health conditions or medications already in the picture. This is also where targeted lab testing gets discussed, based on what your history suggests might be worth investigating. You’ll leave the first appointment with a plan for what’s next, whether that’s lab work, a therapy referral within Harborside’s team, a medication conversation, or some combination.

What the first appointment involves

Medication management and functional psychiatry at Harborside are performed by psychiatric nurse practitioners: Rachel Egan, RN PMHNP-BC, who is Harborside’s clinical director, Emily Pardue, RN PMHNP-BC, and Kirstin Ritchie, RN PMHNP-BC. Each is qualified to evaluate, diagnose and prescribe for mental health conditions, and each brings that training to the functional workup as well as to ongoing medication care. Full bios and credentials for each clinician are on the team page.

Therapy is delivered by Harborside’s licensed therapy team: Hannah Legesse, LICSW, Tori Mahoney, LMHC, Jacquelyn Duford, LCMHC ATR, and Lexie Carchedi, LCSW. Therapy and medication management can run alongside each other or on their own, depending on what someone needs.

Who our clinicians are

Harborside is a private-pay practice and does not bill insurance directly for appointments. Current fees for an initial and a follow-up appointment are listed on the pricing page, and questions about cost can be answered before anything is booked.

What it costs

You can book directly online, choosing an appointment time that works for your schedule in Pocasset. If you’re not sure whether functional psychiatry is the right starting point versus therapy or straight medication management, that’s a fair question to bring to the first call, and Harborside’s team can help sort out where to begin.

Bring it to your first appointment. Existing results can often be used instead of repeating tests.
