Functional Psychiatry for Bedford, MA

A traditional psychiatric work-up starts and often ends with a symptom checklist. Functional psychiatry starts wider. It takes the whole person into account, using targeted testing to look for underlying deficiencies and physiological concerns, like thyroid dysfunction, nutrient gaps, or sleep disruption, that may be driving or worsening how someone feels. It does not replace careful diagnosis. It adds another layer of information to it.

Bedford is a town of scientists, engineers, and Hanscom-affiliated families who tend to read the research before they book the appointment. Parents here are often the ones doing the searching, comparing notes with neighbors in Lexington or Concord, and asking pointed questions about what a treatment plan actually involves before committing to it. Functional psychiatry tends to appeal to exactly that kind of household: people who want a rationale, not just a prescription pad.

Functional Psychiatry for people in Bedford, MA

Harborside is based in Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts, and delivers care by video across the state, including to Bedford. You do not travel to an office. You need a private space, a stable internet connection, and a phone, tablet, or computer with a camera.

A first appointment typically runs longer than a follow-up, since it involves a full history and a discussion of what testing, if any, makes sense given your symptoms and prior labs. Follow-up appointments are shorter and focus on how a treatment plan is working and whether anything needs adjusting. Scheduling frequency varies by person: some patients are seen every few weeks while a plan is being tuned, others move to a longer interval once things are stable.

If medication is part of the plan, prescriptions are sent electronically to a pharmacy of your choosing in Bedford or wherever is convenient for you. Massachusetts permits Harborside’s prescribers to manage a full range of psychiatric medications, including stimulants and other controlled substances when clinically appropriate, with the monitoring that class of medication requires.

How telehealth care actually works

Functional psychiatry at Harborside is used alongside standard evaluation for conditions like anxiety, depression, ADHD, mood instability, and persistent fatigue or brain fog that has not responded to a more conventional approach alone. It is also relevant when someone has tried medication before with limited results and wants a clinician to look more broadly at what else might be contributing, including nutrition, sleep, hormonal patterns, and inflammation. The goal of testing is to build a more complete picture of what is happening in the body, so that any treatment plan, medication or otherwise, is built on more than a symptom list.

What we treat

The first appointment is a conversation. Your clinician will ask about your history, current symptoms, sleep, diet, and any prior lab work or treatment you have tried. From there, you and your clinician decide together whether additional testing makes sense and what it would look for. Nothing is ordered without that discussion, and nothing is assumed before it.

What the first appointment involves

Medication management and functional psychiatry at Harborside are performed by psychiatric nurse practitioners: Rachel Egan, RN PMHNP-BC, who is also Harborside’s clinical director, Emily Pardue, RN PMHNP-BC, and Kirstin Ritchie, RN PMHNP-BC. Each is qualified to evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe for mental health conditions, and each brings her own areas of focus to the functional approach. Full bios and credentials for each clinician are on the team page.

Therapy is delivered by Harborside’s licensed therapy team: Hannah Legesse, LICSW, Tori Mahoney, LMHC, Jacquelyn Duford, LCMHC ATR, and Lexie Carchedi, LCSW. For patients whose care includes both medication and therapy, the two parts of the team coordinate directly.

Who our clinicians are

Harborside is a private-pay practice and does not bill insurance directly for appointments. Current fees for an initial and a follow-up appointment are listed on the pricing page, and questions about cost can be answered before anything is booked.

What it costs

If you are ready to schedule, or you simply want to ask a few questions first, you can reach out through Harborside’s intake process. A member of the team will help match you with a prescriber and confirm whether functional testing is a fit for what you are dealing with before your first appointment is set.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is functional psychiatry the same as functional medicine?

No. It’s psychiatric care from a licensed psychiatric nurse practitioner that also reviews lab work and lifestyle factors, not a separate functional medicine practice.

No. Whether labs make sense is decided together at the first visit, based on your history and symptoms.

Bring it to your first appointment. Existing results can often be used instead of repeating tests.

No. Labs are typically billed separately by the lab itself and may be partly covered by insurance depending on the plan.

Yes. It’s meant to work alongside an existing therapist or primary care provider, not replace them.

Functional psychiatry includes the same prescribing and monitoring, plus a review of physical health factors like sleep, nutrition, and lab markers.
