Functional Psychiatry for Bristol, MA

A traditional psychiatric work-up starts and ends with symptoms. Functional psychiatry starts with the whole person: sleep, nutrition, hormones, gut health, inflammation, and stress load, alongside the standard clinical picture. Harborside uses targeted testing to look for underlying deficiencies or physiological concerns that may be contributing to how someone feels, rather than treating mood or focus symptoms as the whole story.

Bristol runs on its water and its calendar: the harbor, the Fourth of July, the long stretch between the Mount Hope Bridge and the waterfront that residents have known for generations, alongside newer families who came for the coast and stayed. Whether you grew up here or moved to Bristol more recently, the pace of life along Narragansett Bay does not leave much room for a mental health approach that only looks at one piece of the picture.

Functional Psychiatry for people in Bristol

Harborside is based in Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts, and delivers care by video to patients across Rhode Island, including Bristol. You do not travel anywhere. You need a private space, a stable internet connection, and a phone, tablet, or computer with a camera.

An initial appointment runs longer than a routine visit, because there is more ground to cover: your history, your current concerns, and a conversation about whether functional testing makes sense for your situation. Follow-up appointments are shorter and are scheduled at a cadence that fits your care plan, often monthly at first and less frequently as things settle.

If a prescription is part of your plan, it is sent electronically to the pharmacy of your choice in Bristol or wherever is convenient for you. Because Rhode Island restricts certain categories of medication from being prescribed this way, your clinician will talk with you directly about what can and cannot be part of a telehealth medication plan in this state.

How telehealth care actually works

Functional psychiatry at Harborside is used alongside standard evaluation for concerns such as persistent anxiety, low mood and depression, chronic fatigue that affects daily functioning, sleep disruption, and mood symptoms that have not responded the way someone expected to prior treatment. It is also used for people who want a broader look at what might be contributing to how they feel before or alongside starting a new medication.

This is not a replacement for a full clinical evaluation. It is an additional lens: a way of asking whether nutritional status, thyroid function, inflammation, or other physiological factors deserve a closer look as part of understanding your mental health.

What we treat

Your first appointment is a detailed conversation about your mental health history, physical health, sleep, diet, stress, and any prior treatment. Your clinician will ask about symptoms in the way any thorough evaluation does, and will also ask about areas that a standard fifteen-minute medication visit typically skips: energy patterns, digestion, menstrual or hormonal history, past labs, and family history of both mental and physical health conditions.

From there, your clinician will discuss whether targeted lab testing is appropriate. If it is, you will get clear instructions on where to have it done. Results are reviewed together, in plain language, as part of building a plan that may include medication, therapy referral, lifestyle changes, or a combination.

What the first appointment involves

Medication management and functional psychiatry at Harborside are performed by psychiatric nurse practitioners: Rachel Egan, RN PMHNP-BC, who is also clinical director, Emily Pardue, RN PMHNP-BC, and Kirstin Ritchie, RN PMHNP-BC. Each is qualified to evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe for mental health conditions, and each brings a specific interest in the functional and whole-person approach to care. Full bios and credentials for each clinician are on the team page.

When therapy is part of the plan, Harborside’s licensed therapy team, Hannah Legesse LICSW, Tori Mahoney LMHC, Jacquelyn Duford LCMHC ATR, and Lexie Carchedi LCSW, works alongside the prescribing team so that medication, testing, and talk therapy stay connected rather than siloed.

Who our clinicians are

Harborside is a private-pay practice and does not bill insurance directly for appointments. Current fees for an initial appointment and for follow-up visits are listed on the pricing page. If you have questions about cost, you can ask them before anything is booked.

What it costs

If you are in Bristol and thinking about whether functional psychiatry fits your situation, the next step is a first appointment, not a long commitment. You can review the functional psychiatry service page for more detail, or look at the Rhode Island telehealth page and the East Bay and Newport County region page to see how care works across the area. If anxiety is your main concern, the anxiety treatment page walks through what that looks like in more depth.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is functional psychiatry the same as functional medicine?

No. It’s psychiatric care from a licensed psychiatric nurse practitioner that also reviews lab work and lifestyle factors, not a separate functional medicine practice.

No. Whether labs make sense is decided together at the first visit, based on your history and symptoms.

Bring it to your first appointment. Existing results can often be used instead of repeating tests.

No. Labs are typically billed separately by the lab itself and may be partly covered by insurance depending on the plan.

Yes. It’s meant to work alongside an existing therapist or primary care provider, not replace them.

Functional psychiatry includes the same prescribing and monitoring, plus a review of physical health factors like sleep, nutrition, and lab markers.
