Functional Psychiatry for Duxbury, MA

A traditional psychiatric work-up asks what symptoms you have and which medication might address them. Functional psychiatry starts from a wider question: what is actually going on in your body that might be driving how you feel. Harborside uses targeted testing to look for underlying deficiencies and physiological patterns, thyroid function, nutrient levels, sleep and metabolic markers, among others, that can contribute to anxiety, low mood, or trouble concentrating, alongside a standard clinical evaluation.

In Duxbury, a lot of households run on a tight schedule. One or both adults may be commuting into Boston, kids have practices down by the harbor, and the day doesn’t leave much room for a half-day appointment across town. Functional psychiatry with Harborside is built to fit into that kind of week: video visits, no drive, no waiting room, and a clinical approach that treats your physical health and your mental health as connected rather than separate conversations.

Functional Psychiatry for people in Duxbury, MA

Harborside is based in Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts, and delivers care to patients across the state entirely by video, using a secure telehealth platform. You’ll need a phone, tablet, or computer with a camera and a stable internet connection. No special software or app download is typically required beyond clicking a link sent ahead of your appointment.

An initial evaluation usually runs longer than a follow-up, giving your prescriber time to go through your history, current symptoms, and any relevant lab work. Follow-up appointments are shorter and are scheduled at an interval that fits your situation, often every few weeks at first and then spaced out as things settle into a routine. If lab testing is recommended, your clinician will explain what’s being checked and why before you go get it done, usually at a lab near you.

If medication is part of your plan, prescriptions are sent electronically to a pharmacy of your choosing, so you can pick a location that’s convenient in Duxbury or anywhere else you spend your time.

How telehealth care actually works

Functional psychiatry at Harborside is used for a range of concerns where physical and mental health intersect. This includes anxiety, depression, fatigue and low motivation, sleep disruption, difficulty concentrating, and mood changes tied to hormonal or metabolic shifts. It’s also used alongside standard psychiatric care for patients who want their prescriber to look beyond symptoms alone, at the broader physiological picture that might be contributing to how they feel.

This approach doesn’t replace a full clinical evaluation. It adds another layer to it, so decisions about medication or other interventions are made with a fuller set of information.

What we treat

Your first visit is a conversation. Your prescriber will ask about your symptoms, health history, sleep, diet, stress load, and anything else relevant to how you’re feeling. They’ll talk through whether lab testing makes sense for your situation and what it might look for. You’ll leave the appointment with a clear sense of next steps, whether that’s testing, a medication discussion, a referral to one of Harborside’s therapists, or some combination.

There’s no pressure to have everything figured out before you call. The first appointment is where that gets sorted out together.

What the first appointment involves

Medication management and functional psychiatry at Harborside are performed by psychiatric nurse practitioners: Rachel Egan, RN PMHNP-BC, who is also Harborside’s clinical director, Emily Pardue, RN PMHNP-BC, and Kirstin Ritchie, RN PMHNP-BC. Each is qualified to evaluate, diagnose, and prescribe for mental health conditions, including the lab-informed approach used in functional psychiatry. Full bios and credentials for each clinician are on the team page.

Therapy, including eating disorder work, is delivered by Harborside’s licensed therapy team: Hannah Legesse, LICSW, Tori Mahoney, LMHC, Jacquelyn Duford, LCMHC ATR, and Lexie Carchedi, LCSW. If your care plan includes both medication and therapy, your prescriber and therapist coordinate directly.

Who our clinicians are

Frequently Asked Questions

Is functional psychiatry the same as functional medicine?

No. It’s psychiatric care from a licensed psychiatric nurse practitioner that also reviews lab work and lifestyle factors, not a separate functional medicine practice.

No. Whether labs make sense is decided together at the first visit, based on your history and symptoms.

Bring it to your first appointment. Existing results can often be used instead of repeating tests.

No. Labs are typically billed separately by the lab itself and may be partly covered by insurance depending on the plan.

Yes. It’s meant to work alongside an existing therapist or primary care provider, not replace them.

Functional psychiatry includes the same prescribing and monitoring, plus a review of physical health factors like sleep, nutrition, and lab markers.
