Functional Psychiatry for Rye, NH

A traditional psychiatric work-up asks what symptoms you have and which medication might address them. A functional approach asks a different question first: what is happening in your body that might be driving those symptoms in the first place. Harborside uses targeted testing to assess for underlying deficiencies and physiological concerns that can affect mood, energy, focus, and sleep, then builds a plan around what that testing shows.

In Rye, NH, that kind of careful, whole-person evaluation tends to fit how people already think about their health. Rye and the surrounding Portsmouth, NH coastal towns draw people who are deliberate about their choices, whether they have lived on the Seacoast for generations or moved here on purpose for the quality of life. A more thorough starting point for mental health care is consistent with that mindset.

How telehealth care actually works

Harborside is based in Yarmouth Port, Massachusetts, and delivers care to patients in New Hampshire entirely by video. You do not travel to an office. Appointments happen through a secure telehealth platform, and all you need is a private space, a stable internet connection, and a computer, tablet, or smartphone with a camera.

An initial appointment runs longer than a standard follow-up, since it includes a detailed history and a discussion of what functional testing might be useful in your case. Follow-up appointments are shorter and happen on a schedule that depends on where you are in your care, sometimes every few weeks at first, then spacing out over time. If a prescription is part of your plan, it is sent electronically to a pharmacy of your choice in Rye or anywhere else in New Hampshire that works for you.

Lab work, when it is part of the picture, is typically done through a local lab or an at-home collection kit, with results reviewed together during a video appointment.

What we treat

Functional psychiatry at Harborside is used alongside standard evaluation for concerns like persistent low mood, anxiety, chronic fatigue that affects mental health, sleep disruption, and mood symptoms that have not responded the way someone expected them to. The idea is to look at nutritional status, hormonal patterns, and other physiological factors that can influence how you feel, rather than treating symptoms in isolation.

This approach does not replace an honest conversation about your history, your stress, and your daily life. It adds another layer of information to that conversation, so the plan you and your clinician build reflects more of what is actually going on in your body.

What we treat

What the first appointment involves

Your first video appointment is mostly conversation. Your clinician will ask about your current symptoms, your medical and mental health history, your sleep, your diet, and any relevant family history. From there, you and your clinician decide together whether targeted lab testing makes sense and which markers are worth investigating.

You will leave that first appointment with a plan, which may include lab work to complete before your next visit, a medication conversation, a referral to one of Harborside’s therapists, or some combination of these. Nothing moves faster than you are ready for, and every step is explained before it happens.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is functional psychiatry the same as functional medicine?

Bring it to your first appointment. Existing results can often be used instead of repeating tests.

No. Labs are typically billed separately by the lab itself and may be partly covered by insurance depending on the plan.

Yes. It’s meant to work alongside an existing therapist or primary care provider, not replace them.
